Coaching for
Abrasive Leaders
Our coaches are certified in a coaching method designed specifically for people who are unaware of, or who minimize, the impact of their communication and behavior, and their bosses.
Leaders receive coaching based on Dr. Laura Crawshaw’s extensive research with over 450 executives and professionals. Their bosses receive coaching based on Catherine Mattice’s expertise in the management and leadership required to hold individuals accountable to respectful behavior.
The very specific, methodical process we follow helps leaders quickly gain insight into the impact of their words and actions, and develop non-destructive communication strategies, while their bosses develop strategies for ensuring the leaders’ success.
Listen to Catherine’s guest appearance on podcast, Lead Me On, (36 mins) to learn why people engage in bullying, abrasive communication, or destructive patterns (it’s because they care!), how she and her team approach coaching, and about the deep relationships she’s developed with coaching clients.
OUR PROCESS, IN SHORT:
Abrasive leaders are often results-getting high performers, making it scary and hard for their employer to take direct action. Our process is supportive, empathetic, and focused on accountability.
- Interviews: With the leader’s permission, we interview up to 15 people to understand what the leader’s team needs from them in terms of behavior change.
- Coaching: Starting with delivering the feedback collected to the leader, coaching commences and lasts for about four months.
- Check-ins: With coaching and support provided to the leader’s boss, the leader and their boss are checking in on progress regularly.
- Success: Now that the leader understands the impact of their old ways, and has the tools to make positive change, a second round of interviews proves coaching was a success.
THE GOAL:
Our goal in coaching is to help leaders be more effective than they already are by eliminating their disruptive behavior.
Our coaching clients are high performers, extremely valuable to the organization, and highly intelligent – the very reasons the leader’s boss finds it so hard to hold them accountable to better behavior.
Through coaching, leaders understand perceptions of them and why those perceptions exist. Then, with our support, leaders can develop and test strategies that will eliminate those negative perceptions – and their bosses can hold them accountable with care.
BENEFITS OF COACHING:
Our clients have reported they are:
• Happier individuals
• More self-aware and more tolerant of mistakes
• Better at building relationships and can readily see the positive effects of their behavior change
And we believe them, because their second round of team interviews demonstrates this and more. As a result, the organization sees:
• A better performing team
• Reduced stress, complaints, and turnover
• Reduced risk of liability for complaints
