Studies show that a large percentage of workers report to be bullied at work, while a significant percentage of HR executives also report that one or more employees resign due to bullying. On the other hand, most psychologically-based disabilities point directly to bullying as reasons for such illness. Cases such as these reflect a lack of civility at workplace which needs serious addressing.
With this, a number of business executives and lawmakers take action as a need for workplace bullying prevention programs arise. Related statutes have been passed in Australia, parts of Canada, and several countries in Europe. The United States, on the other hand, takes action as initiated by California legislators in 2003 wherein a bill was passed to provide cause of action for abusive behaviors in workplaces.
Nevertheless, a wise employer would not want to wait for a bill to be passed in order to formulate policies that would address workplace bullying issues which threatens civility at work. A good organization treats workplace bullying themselves by a series of workplace bullying prevention programs.
