Civility Partners partners with CESCaL to raise funds for LGBT Conference

In an era that champions diversity and inclusivity, it’s disheartening to confront the harsh reality that nine out of ten LGBT students experience harassment at school. This alarming statistic not only reflects the persisting challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community but also underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to create safe and supportive environments for all students.

Beyond the immediate impact on their academic experience, the consequences of this harassment extend far into the realms of mental health, with a staggering four times higher likelihood of attempted suicide among LGBT students and a dropout rate three times the national average.

 

The Mental Health Toll

The statistics regarding the mental health of LGBT students paint an even bleaker picture. A four times higher likelihood of suicide attempts is an alarming figure that demands urgent attention. Beyond the physical safety of these students, their emotional well-being is at stake. It’s time to explore the intersectionality of mental health and educational policies, fostering an environment that not only protects but uplifts the spirits of every student, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

 

A Call for Comprehensive Policies:

To tackle this pervasive issue head-on, schools and policymakers must adopt a multifaceted approach. Comprehensive anti-bullying policies, inclusive sex education, and awareness campaigns are pivotal steps toward creating an environment where acceptance and understanding flourish. By dismantling discriminatory structures and fostering empathy among students, we can pave the way for a more equitable educational experience.

 

The Role of Educators and Parents:

Educators and parents play a pivotal role in shaping the mindset of the next generation. It is crucial for teachers to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to create a supportive space for all students. Similarly, parents must engage in open and accepting conversations with their children, fostering an environment that promotes diversity and understanding from an early age.

To make a difference in these students’ lives, The Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership (CESCaL), a 501(c)3 non-profit, offers the only annual national educator conference focused on LGBT youth titled, Supporting Students ~ Saving Lives. CESCaL will present the 4th annual convening at the DoubleTree Hotel in San Diego, February 15-17, 2013.

CESCaL brings in the best national LGBTQ advocacy organization and educator associations to train, provide resources, and empower educators to create needed change in schools. Some of those organizations include: GLSEN, Trevor Project, PFLAG, True Colors Fund, American Psychological Association, American Federation of Teachers, National Education Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and many more.

Last February, the conference sold out with 500 educators attending from 29 states and 3 countries.  After being mentioned  in national magazines, and receiving coverage by CNN, the conference was recognized by President Obama.

Unfortunately, due to harsh budget cuts in education, districts are no longer sending educators to conferences nor are they providing needed district training on working with LGBTQ students. Therefore, CESCaL is seeking fundraising opportunities to provide for educator scholarships so that they can attend the conference.

So that we can create awareness about workplace bullying, celebrate the release of Catherine Mattice’s book, BACK OFF! Your Kick-Ass Guide to Ending Bullying at Work, and help CESCaL raise funds for their event, we are throwing a joint fundraiser/book release party!
